More violence aimed at Jews

AS Australian Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of the most famous Jew of all time, Australian Jews say 1999 has brought more anti-semitic violence and abuse than ever.

Among 280 incidents reported to the Executive Council of Australian Jewry (ECAJ) in the past 12 months were: a pig's head was left at the entrance of a synagogue before a festival service; a motorist blocked the driveway of a Jewish school, yelling that all the children should be killed; worshippers leaving synagogues were pelted with eggs; rocks were thrown through the windows of a Jewish school, a shop and a youth club.

The council has been told private homes, synagogues and a Jewish charity have been trashed and daubed with swastikas and hate slogans, and people walking to and from synagogues have been abused from passing cars.

While total incidents are lower overall than for 1998 the worst year on the council's records the incidence of physical assault, property damage and in-your-face harassment was the highest ever, double that of the previous 12 months.

``The money-grabbing Zionists were there when Jesus was crucified, and they are here today," is an example from newsletter and website Annwn, published by J S Chiappalone of Malanda, Queensland.

In other hate publications, Jews are blamed for the death of Jesus and for a one-world government conspiracy, poisoning campaigns, the tightening of gun laws and even the plane crash that killed JFK junior.

Each week brings at least two reports of threatening phone calls and hate mail and, according to an ECAJ report, ``e-mail is now established as a method used by individuals and organisations to harass and threaten Jewish Australians".

Radio gave air time to Holocaust deniers such as Frederick Toben, whose Adelaide Institute was condemned by the report as ``arguably the most vicious and malicious" Australian anti-Jewish group and who was recently jailed in Germany for inciting racial hatred but released after German sympathisers paid his bail.

``Most Australian Jews quite rightly would say we don't live in a society that is unfriendly to us," said ECAJ vice-president Jeremy Jones. ``Far from it. It's irrelevant to most Australians whether you are Jewish or Calathumpian or whatever.

``Who would have thought Sydney has been the scene of the most arson attacks on synagogues of any city in the world since the end of World War II? There were six in 1991 and another in 1993."
