You've Got Six Months To Save Nhs, Nurses Tell Blair
From the Press Association
Monday April 3, 2000

The Government has just six months to save the health service, nurses' leaders are warning.

Patients and staff will lose faith in the NHS if they do not see improvements soon, said Christine Hancock, General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing.

She called for immediate action to halt the flood of nursing staff out of the NHS to solve the staffing crisis.

Miss Hancock also called for a "modern matron" - combining the assertive leadership of a Hattie Jacques-type character with new and flexible working practices.

She told delegates: "On the eve of the last general election, Tony Blair told the electorate it had 24 hours to save the NHS. The electorate, apparently, took heed and voted accordingly.

"Today, I think the Government has a little longer than 24 hours to save the NHS - but not much. Maybe six months? The people who deliver and receive health services have got to feel the difference very soon."

Her warning came after last month's Budget announcement of an extra 2 billion for the health service.

Miss Hancock gave a "quick-fix" prescription for solving some of the NHS's immediate problems:

:: ending patients waiting on trolleys in Accident and Emergency departments for hours, and the indignity of mixed sex wards as well as ensuring hospitals look clean.

Six expert committees of ministers and professional leaders are drawing up a national plan for the health service.
